We believe that children learn through play and that it is essential for children to have varied opportunities to create, role play, explore and experiment. Sometimes, in our society, play is not appreciated as it does not appear directly productive. However, it is through play that children learn about others, themselves, and the world around them.

Activities are open-ended with children free to meet and respond to activities in a self-determined way.

Art: Both free art and theme-based projects are offered. We encourage creativity and self expression through art opportunities.

Free play: Opportunities include dramatic play, literature, water/sand play, gross motor activities, art, manipulative toys, blocks and science. Field trips, cooking, music and movement, etc. are offered on a rotating basis.

Activity Schedule: The schedule for our program is flexible and adapted when necessary to capitalize on emerging interests of the children with spontaneous opportunities providing growth and learning experiences. General routines of circle time, tidy time, lunch time provide basic framework and structure.

We have a policy of gradual entry.  In September, children are gradually introduced to our program. Letters are mailed in mid-August informing parents/guardians of dates and times.

Holidays

The preschool is closed for all statutory holidays, and follows John Knox Christian School’s schedule for Christmas break, Spring break, and year-end.

We have a rotational schedule for ‘Show and Tell’. Beginning in October, each child is given the opportunity to be 'Special Helper' for the day. On this day your child may bring a 'Show & Tell' item.  Please do not allow your child to bring toys from home except on these special days.

A one-time special event fee of $50.00 is collected in September. This fee covers field trips and special event costs during the year.

A newsletter is distributed via email at the beginning of each month informing parents/guardians of program themes, field trips, etc. As well, special announcements are posted on the door near the sign in/out area.

If you wish, we will celebrate your child’s birthday at preschool. Please feel free to bring a ‘special treat’ (e.g., Rice Krispie Squares, cookies, cupcakes, Timbits, etc.) to share. We’ll bring out the big birthday candle and sing, “Happy Birthday." (Please remember - no nuts or coconut.)

An informal child-initiated snack time is part of our daily program. It is intended to provide children the opportunity to make choices about their day and offer social opportunity for conversation and shared experience. Both snacks and lunch are brought from home and we ask that parents/guardians help us promote a healthy diet and good dental care. Please do not send candy, chips, bars (including granola, cereal, etc.), fruit leather, or fruit roll-ups, and keep staff informed if your child has or develops any food allergies. Exceptions: Of course we welcome treats for Special Events/Birthdays/etc. The preschool is a NUT FREE ZONE due to severe allergies. Please do not send peanut butter or any kind of nuts or coconut. In addition to providing healthy choices for your preschooler, we also request that you cut grapes and wiener pieces in half. These foods present a significant choking hazard when served whole.

Picture Taking

Parents are welcome to photograph their own child/ren at the centre. Photographing other children without staff knowledge and consent is not permitted.

Chewing Gum

We do not allow chewing gum in the preschool.

We are prepared to care for children in the event of a critical situation. Procedures are posted in the centre. The preschool maintains an earthquake kit and a first aid kit at all times. Staff hold up-to-date First Aid Certification. If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with any staff member.

Please send your child in comfortable and casual clothing so that there is no worry about paint or glue spills. Footwear must be sturdy with non-slip soles. On wet days, if your child is wearing boots, please send inside shoes. The children will spend some time outdoors each day unless it is unsafe to do so (e.g., icy conditions).

Please do not send your child to school if any of the following applies: :

•   Your child is unable to participate in our typical daily schedule (including active, quiet, indoor and outdoor activities)

•    Your child has an infectious illness, signs of nausea, a rash, discharging eyes, fever, diarrhea, or a severe cough/cold

If, while at the preschool, any of the above symptoms occur, or are noticed, the parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up their child immediately. If the staff is unable to contact the parent/guardian, we will attempt to contact the emergency persons listed on your child’s registration form. Please keep staff informed of health related issues (e.g. head lice, communicable disease, etc.) so we can take appropriate precautions.
